Short Program Description
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
V:Log is a fast, professional quality video library
manager for use with SMPTE time-coded videotape.
Log tapes with easy-to-use Editor, then use powerful,
menu-driven search capability to create EDL's.
Features automatic time code calculation, trim, copy,
move, paste, read external file, mark/unmark, calculate
total and block duration, text & mail merge output,
and much, much more. Record start/stop/duration time
codes, text video description, channels used (video/
audio 1/audio 2). Store Reel Information with each
list: producer, client, date shot, etc.
Assumed Knowledge
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The V:Log documentation files assume that:
- You are familiar with industry-standard SMPTE
time code; what it is used for and how it works.
- You have a working knowledge of DOS, and how
to perform basic operations such as copying
files, changing directories, etc.
If you are NOT familiar with these topics, go through
the information in the text file "BASICS.DOC" before
starting the V:Log tutorial files. (See below for
detailed descriptions of all V:Log documentation files.)
Make A Working Copy
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
To avoid possible problems, make a working copy of the
V:Log disk. DO NOT run the program, or inspect any
of the sample files, using the original disk.
Use the following guidelines to make a Work Disk. If
you are unfamiliar with the processes described below,
consult either your DOS manual, or a more experienced
DOS user.
(FLOPPY DRIVE SYSTEMS ONLY:)
■ Use the DOS "DISKCOPY" utility to
make a 'mirror image' copy of the
original disk.
(FLOPPY OR HARD DRIVE SYSTEMS:)
■ If copying to a hard drive, create
a subdirectory for the programs and
files. (e.g., "md /vlog".)
■ Use the DOS "COPY *.*" command to
copy all of the files.
■ Store the original disk in a safe place.

Files On Disk
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Listed below are the files on the Shareware distribution
disk:

VLCONFIG.EXE Program to create V:Log configuration files.
VL.CFG Example configuration file.
README Name, version, pricing information, etc.
ORDER Order form & information.
NEWSTUFF Description of the latest features of V:Log.
INTRO.DOC This file!
Introduction, notes, how to proceed.
BASICS.DOC An introductory explanation of video
production and time code.
VLOG.DOC Main documentation, tutorial.
VLSEARCH.DOC Tutorial on Search operations.
VLCONFIG.DOC Documentation for VLCONFIG program.
REFERNCE.DOC Reference to commands, menus, etc.
CATS.LOG Sample V:Log file used in tutorial.
DOGS.LOG Ditto.
SAMPLEx.LOG (1-8) Sample files to show search capabilities.
SAMPLE.PIK Sample "pick" file.
CATS.TXT Example of Text output file.
CATS.MRG Example of Mail Merge output file.
SAMPLES.RPT Example of V:Log Report file.
How To Use The Documentation
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The V:Log documentation files are structured like the
chapters in a book. Each file represents a fairly
complete area of information about V:Log. However,
some files build on knowledge presented in other files.
For an introductory description of video production,
videotape, time code, and other relevant topics,
start with the documentation file "BASICS.DOC".
After that, or if you already understand these topics,
proceed to the file "VLOG.DOC". Read the information
and practice the tutorial activities in that file.
Once you are familiar with the basic operation of the
V:Log program, then you can branch out: learn how to
configure the program by reading "VLCONFIG.DOC", learn
how to perform searches of your tape logs in
"VLSEARCH.DOC", or study over the lists of commands,
operations, etc. in "REFERNCE.DOC".

SAMPLES.RPT A text "V:Log Report" file, showing
important information on the sample
log files provided on the V:Log disk.
Log Reports are easily created with
V:Log. They are used to track and
catalog all of your log files or
selected groups, using the same
powerful selection tools which are
used to search log files.
TEST01.LOG A series of log files, which are
TEST02.LOG provided to test various settings in
TEST03.LOG the Parameters. Different combinations
TEST04.LOG of dates, Producers, and so on let you
TEST05.LOG experiment with Set Find settings to
perform searches. (See the documentation
file "VLSEARCH.DOC" for a beginning
tutorial on searching, and explanations
of 'Parameters', 'Set Find', and other
tools in V:Log which provide powerful
search capability.)
(See the sample Log Report file for
a listing of the Reel Info in these and
the other sample Log files.)
SAMPLE1.PIK Sample files - "pick" files, resulting
SAMPLE2.PIK from search operations - which are
SAMPLE3.PIK described in the tutorial file
"VLSEARCH.DOC".
